When Should You Have Your Moles Checked?

Blog

Your moles can change over time with age and with environmental changes such as the sun. The sun's rays can do damage to the skin and cause moles to grow, in addition to changing the ones you already have. If you have new moles or your moles are changing, it may be time to get your moles checked. If you aren't sure if you should have a mole check, read on for a few reasons why you should and when they should be checked.

Your Moles Are Different Colored

If you have moles that have changed, not only in size, but are now changing in color as well, it's time to have them checked. Moles are usually brown, so if they're turning black, or they've turned a reddish color, you should have them checked. Your moles may also turn a blue color, have it checked as well. Pay attention to your moles and the colors they are, if they are changing at all, get them checked.

You Have A Lot Of New Moles

If you've never had moles before at all, and suddenly you have a lot of new moles, which are raised, have them checked. It's best to be safe than sorry, so have the moles checked to be sure they aren't anything to worry about. As you age, you're going to notice new moles or spots on your skin, but if you have a lot of new ones and they are irregular in any way, have your moles checked.

You Have A History Of Skin Cancer

If you have a history of skin cancer in your family, have had skin cancer yourself, or any other type of cancer, get your moles checked to be sure none of them are cancerous. If you have had history before, there's a good chance you could have skin cancer again. Get your moles checked and any odd spots on your body checked to be sure it isn't skin cancer.

If you have a lot of moles, whether they appear normal, or you just aren't sure, you should have a mold check with your dermatologist at least once per year. This can help give the dermatologist a baseline for your moles and having them checked will help determine if they have changed at all. If you have a spot you aren't sure about, don't wait, schedule a mole check appointment with your dermatologist.
