Dry Scalp Leaving You With Flaky Skin Or With Cradle Cap? What You Can Do

Blog

When your scalp is dry, you may be itching your head an awful lot. Scratching your scalp may lead those around you to believe you have head lice or something else wrong with your scalp. If you have a dry scalp and it's flaking off onto your clothing, then you really may start to feel self-conscious. If you have an issue with dry scalp, and you are being left with this flaky skin or you have chunks of your scalp coming off in your hair, there are things you can do. Read on for helpful tips to clear up your dry scalp.

Use An Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Switch your shampoo to something that won't dry out your scalp. If your usual shampoo is giving you dandruff, your scalp may also be producing a lot more oils in order to get rid of the dryness. This may result in a dry scalp, but also greasy hair as well from the excess oil production from your skin. If you are experiencing this issue, you need to switch up your shampoo to an anti-dandruff shampoo that will add moisture to your scalp and remove the grease and oils in your hair.

Use Neem Oil

If your skin is very dry on your scalp, you can apply a little bit of neem oil before you go to bed at night, then wash it out the following morning. The neem oil can help add moisture to your scalp and clear up dry or flaky patches. Adding too much neem oil may cause you to have oily hair, so only add a little bit to your scalp and work it into the scalp.

Remove The Skin Flakes

If you have dry flakes or patches that you can peel off with your fingernails (much like cradle cap), you need to remove this dead skin. Before you get into the shower, use a comb with teeth very close together to brush through your hair and to brush your scalp as well. Remove as much of the dry skin as possible, then shower to help remove the rest from your hair and your scalp. Don't scrub your scalp too much to prevent breaking the skin or leaving you with sores on your head.

If you have a dry scalp, and you're left with flaky skin or peeling skin, get to the dermatologist for treatment to help heal the skin on your scalp. You may need a medicated treatment if over-the-counter treatments aren't working. You could have something more than just dry skin as well. Make an appointment with the dermatology clinic, such as Desert Dermatology & Skin Cancer Specialists, to be sure.
